VION's business operations are inextricably linked to some form of environmental impact: both at our own companies, but also in the total food chain.
On the other hand, there is the unique combination of VION's core activities (Food & Ingredients). VION's production is sustainable by definition since all residual products of the slaughterhouses are used and are given added value. In addition, these residual products (such as fats) are often unique sources for fuel production. Our company Ecoson produces biofuels (both biogas and biodiesel) on the basis of animal fats. Ecoson is one of the leading producers of biofuel in the Netherlands. The meat-and-bone meal that comes from our company Rendac is used as a fuel for power plants.
VION strives to minimise its environmental impact where possible through continuous improvement initiatives and by mapping and evaluating the various environmental aspects at regular intervals. VION supports the ambitions of the various national and international climate programmes.
The majority of the greenhouse gases emitted in meat chains are emitted in the first production links. Together with its chain partners, VION is working to reduce these emissions. Through Farmingnet, VION gives pig farmers online information that they can use to optimise their business processes, and thus reduce their emissions.
VION start to make the carbon footprint of its products transparent. The use of energy and the resulting corresponding production processes. For some VION companies, use of energy is directly linked to the production of energy. Sustainable biogas and biodiesel, produced from animal by-products by Rendac and Ecoson, are examples of this. Using these sustainable biofuels to generate green electricity structurally lowers the total CO2 emission of our business operations. In this way, VION has made a clear, positive contribution to reducing the greenhouse effect.
As a leading food producer, VION actively participates in international consultation groups to reach a standard calculation method for the carbon footprint.
